Hi Trent Woods Neighbors!
Holiday excitement is in the air. In good times and bad times we find that friends and family bind together to help each other out. We are seeing more and more multi-generational households, whether it be seniors moving in with family or twenty-something’s coming back home to save some money by living with Mom and Dad before buying their own home.
If you think about it, this is the way it used to be before we all “had to have our own space”. We also are seeing more and more families moving closer to their extended family. Are there vacant houses in your neighborhood? There are some great deals right now and this might be the perfect spot for your loved one! Or maybe there’s a home that would be perfect for you AND you older of younger relatives.
According to the most recent US Census, the number of heads of households who share their homes with their parents, brothers and sisters, and other relatives grew 42 percent from 2000 to 2007. The census also finds a 75 percent increase in parents under the age of 65 who are now living with their adult children. In all, 3.6 million American households have made room for older parents. “Sharing a home represents an old-fashioned approach to economic challenge, experts point out. Donna Butts, executive director of Generations United, an advocacy organization. "It is evolving in some ways back to how families used to live. That is, they're living in multi-generational households,” Butt said. ABC News, Barbara Pinto (09/23/08)
What is more exciting is that New Bern is a great place for all ages and once people get a look at our the total quality of life here, they see that it makes sense in a lot of ways. Our affordable cost of living, our full-time community (as opposed to seasonal), our educational and medical infrastructure, and most of all, our great people, are unsurpassed. We have all this but still keep that small town feeling of warmth and generosity.
So remember to show this article to your family and friends (that is, if you want them near by!), and let them know about this new “old” trend. Give yourself the gift of a new neighbor this Christmas by telling them how wonderful New Bern is and how much you would love for them to be nearer ALL year long!
I love New Bern and Trent Woods! Thanks to all of you for your calls and encouragement that the Real Estate market is BACK ON TRACK!
